Day 19 March 30, 2010

Today in class we got into groups of four and each played a role to look at different webquests. The role I played was "The Efficiency Expert". The efficiency expert:: You value time a great deal. You believe that too much time is wasted in today's classrooms on unfocused activity and learners not knowing what they should be doing at a given moment. To you, a good WebQuest is one that delivers the most learning bang for the buck. If it's a short, unambitious activity that teaches a small thing well, then you like it. If it's a longterm activity, it had better deliver a deep understanding of the topic it covers, in your view. The webquest I found that fit my role was "We All Scream for Ice Cream." This webquest had students reaseaching and creating a flow chart of "How ice cream is made". Then, they create a new flavor of ice cream and design the package for the new ice cream flavor. Finally, they will make their own homemade ice cream. I think this webquest fit my role best becuase it was a short activity that didn't take a lot of time, and it teaches a small thing. The ISTE NETSs standard that helps K-12 students meet is Standard 2a: Communication and Collaboration. Standard 2a says that students interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts,or others employing a variety of digital environments and media. This would be a good project for my future classroom beucase it helps the students to interact and to be creative with their own ideas.

Day 18 March 25, 2010

Today in class we watched digital photostories that were created by the Fairview Middle School students. I think that creating a digital story helps students to meet Standard 1b : Creativity and Innovation. Creating a digital story fits under this category because it helps them to create original works as a means of personal or group expression. This is a great activity to create in the classroom because it helps students to use their imagination to create a story of their own. Students can collaborate with their peers and other students to get feedback on their stories. I think that the students would have fun creating a digital story.

Day 17 March 23, 2010

Today in class we joined Bruceton Five Ning site. We created a mini blog on our profile on ning also. Making a mini biography in a social network site helps students to use technology as a tool to research, organize, evaluate and communicate information. This is a good site to communicate with classmates and other members of the site. I think that this will be useful in my future teaching becuase it will get the studnets more involved and closer to each other. The students will learn more about each other and be more creative. By creating a mini biography, it helps your classmates to know you better.

Day 16 March 11, 2010

Today in class we are working on a magazine cover. We have to make a magazine cover about getting "Educator of the Month". We have to put our teaching philosophy and all of the activities that we would do in our class. I think that this activity fits media literacy because we understand and utilize the most appropriate media creation tools, characteristics and conventions. I think that this activity was really fun and interesting. This would be a good project for when I become a teacher to have them create a magazine cover about a topic we are learning in class. If we were going over the 50 states, they could each pick a state and describe the state and activities to do in the state on a magazine cover. This will be a great activity that my students will enjoy and be interested in.

Day 15 March 9, 2010

The deconstructing of Arnold helps students to develop 21st century skills for media literacy by examining how individuals interpret messages differently, how values and points of view are included or excluded, and how media can influence beliefs and behaviors. The two pictures of Arnold were very different, the one showed him very muscular and intimidating. The other showed him in a suit and he looked like a very nice and understanding guy. The colors the person used and the pictures of him showed different sides and interpretations of Arnold. Everyone had their own views and perceptions of the pictures. This shows that people think and interpret different pictures and messages differently. This would be a good activity in my future classroom to show students how everyone has their own opinion.

Day 14 March 4, 2010

Today in class we made a wordle based on Web 2.0. We used the program Jing to capture the image of the wordle. This activity fits under Creativity and Innovation by creating new and worthwhile ideas. It also helps us to be open and responsive to new and diverse perspectives; incorpoate group input and feedback. This would be a good activity to get students engaged in learning a subject such as science or history. This would be good to explain the vocabulary words for each chapter in their book. I think that this is a very creative and fun project to use in my future teaching.

Day 13 March 2, 2010

Today in class we finished collaborative story writing with 5th graders. We used personal bookmarks on Blackboard to create bookmarks of the frequently used websites. I think that using Personal Bookmarks in Blackboard promot Information Literacy Skills by letting you to be more organized, and to get to the websites more quickly. Using Personal Bookmarks in Blackboard promot Media Literacy Skills by applying a fundamental understanding of the ehtical/legal issues sournding the access and use of media.
